The Difference Between Traditional Therapy and Somatic Healing

When Awareness Is Not Enough

When I work with women who have done a lot of traditional therapy, they usually begin our session by telling me everything they understand about their process.

They can explain their attachment style and the trauma or particular wounds they experienced as children. They are often able to talk about it in a very pragmatic way.

They understand what they are experiencing and they can trace where it comes from - which is always a very important part of the journey.

But the reason why they come to me is because they haven’t been able to transform it in their life.

They have this experience of being able to see it all, and yet it hasn’t changed.

When The Body Holds What The Mind Cannot Release

In my experience, the only true way to experience lasting transformation is - hands down - through the body.

For example, someone who grew up with an abusive parent will most likely still hold the pain their inner child experienced.

Now, this pain doesn’t make sense, it’s not logical or rational. But it lives in the body.

Research has shown that trauma gets stored in the body, meaning that it still lives within us.

When we experience something that triggers it, it can wake up, and we find ourselves reacting from that place of pain.

Let’s look at another example of someone who experiences a lot of self-judgement, and feelings of being a failure, and not good enough. This person has the imprint of this energy in their body.

Over time it has become a well-known pathway that they go to without even thinking about it.

Again, it’s an experience that doesn’t make sense, it’s not logical, but the energy of it lives in the body.

So in order to heal the roots of our misaligned experiences, it is essential to work with these experiences in the body.

Healing At The Root Through The Body

In a Somatic Healing session, you are invited to explore the challenges you are experiencing in your life.

Then, I will invite you to drop into your body, and experience grounding, and safety.

Once you feel comfortable, I will guide you to feel the sensations in your body that come up when you bring this experience to your attention.

From that place, we can actually notice what is held there in your body. Maybe it’s a wounded inner child, an energetic pattern or ancestral trauma.

The beauty of working through the body is that we can know what is at the root of your experience.

Once we gain this clarity, we can begin the healing work of addressing for example the needs that haven’t been met or the limiting beliefs that you have learned so you can free yourself from this baggage.

Healing at the root is always more challenging because it invites us to revisit and feel experiences that may be uncomfortable. But it’s also the one way to ensure you are thorough with your healing, and you can truly move on in your life.

If you would like to explore this type of work, you can book an Initial Connection Call so we can chat for 30 minutes and answer any questions you may have.
