Working with Addiction

Redefining Addiction

Now, when we talk about addiction, we often picture someone on the streets with a heroin problem, or someone who is an alcoholic.

We picture deep chronic addictions.

But today, I want to talk to you about the small addictions. The behaviors that are not shocking.

The things that won’t make your family worry about you, and that would absolutely not alert the police.

It’s about everything we do to numb our feelings.

Everything we do when we experience an uncomfortable emotion, sensation or thought.

It has to do with leaving our body.

It has to do with distractions.

It allows us to place our attention on something that feels safer than feeling what’s here.

Because somewhere inside of us, we believe that being with our experience is threatening or dangerous.

This can stem from childhood experiences where we were surrounded by intense emotions that made us feel unsafe.

So when this comes from within, the reflex is to distract as a survival mechanism.

We have to consider that, at all times, our body is trying to protect us from what it perceives as a threat.

If feeling has been something that has been experienced as being too much, then our body is going to try and protect us from that.

The rewiring we are practicing here is all about creating safety within ourselves to be with our experiences.

What about the addiction itself?

Maybe you scroll too much on your phone, or watch too many youtube videos.

Maybe you eat a lot or train at the gym compulsively.

The thing is that it doesn’t exactly matter what the addiction is.

Often, we can’t actually control the behavior itself.

Setting a timer on our apps or trying a new diet will only take us so far.

What we truly need to address is the place inside of us that creates these behaviors.

The place inside of us that is scared, feels unsafe or unsettled.

Healing at the Root

When we meet this pain, this hungry ghost, we then have a much better chance at healing the root of our addiction.

When this part of us feels grounded, reassured, and present, we simply do not need to distract anymore.

We build a deeper capacity to be with ourselves and with what we are feeling.

This is part of coming home to your own energy, deepening your connection to what is true inside of you.
