How To Be Sovereign In Our Relationships
I think I’m enlightened.
(Of course I’m not.)
But! Ram Dass once said that if you think you’re enlightened, go spend a week with your family.
That’s exactly what I did.
I spent time with my family in Montréal, and I practiced (quite hard, to be honest) this very simple, yet profound experience of staying in myself.
I connected with the warm, loving joy that lives within me. And I consciously practiced meeting every moment from that place.
I didn’t do it for others - I did it for me.
Simply because I want to be able to be myself in all areas of my life.
If I got on this spiritual journey in the first place, it was because I wanted my life to be fulfilling and nourishing.
So, naturally, I brought the practice where it can be most challenging.
What Is Sovereignty In Relationships?
To me, it’s the capacity to choose where we are interacting from.
Sometimes, our family can wake up old ways of being, patterns, even wounds that used to be part of our lives.
Things we learned before we could even speak. And they are not easy to let go of.
Particularly since these behaviours were often connected with our sense of love and security.
But there is the invitation here that maybe we can choose.
Choose to play out the pattern, or choose to stay rooted in ourself.
Choose to lean right into that trigger or continue to be with what is loving and true in us.
Now this practice is not easy. It’s a constant awareness of noticing where we are coming from.
The idea is to not let others decide that for us.
What That Practice Was Like
It might sound funny, but I experienced a lot of little joys.
Small almost imperceptible moments where I internally celebrated the fact that I had stayed in myself.
I noticed the moments where I didn’t fall down a trap, where I avoided a precipice.
The moments when I was able to find my grounding when I needed it.
I celebrated the f*** out of all that.
Because everytime I could feel that I had deepened my own power.
My own capacity to stay rooted in what’s true for me. To honor that.
To not abandon myself.
You want to talk about big achievements? Now that’s a big achievement.
An Easy Practice? Not At All.
Wildly Beneficial? YES.
I want to invite you to consider also that when you act from that warm, loving presence, you are offering a powerful gift to the people around you.
You are bringing something different to the table.
You are inviting them to meet you here.
In this space of sovereignty.
You would be surprised at how it can transform interactions.
Simply because you are no longer playing in this old movie.
You are writing something new.
A relationship where all of you is part of the story.
Want to go deeper?
